CORe Surgical Facility at Flinders University specialises in comparative orthopaedic research and provides a unique service for the clinical evaluation of orthopaedics in a sheep model. CORe is one of few facilities with the specialist equipment and expertise required to undertake clinical research using animal models, especially in the area of orthopaedics.
The dedicated staff, headed by Associate Professor John Field, undertake diverse surgical research on large animals at the state-of-the-art facility. Consisting of an operating theatre, radiology, recovery and minor procedure facilities, the surgery is coupled with animal holding pens on-site.
CORe is able to provide models of human orthopaedic diseases. Utilising primarily sheep, many orthopaedic conditions, as they apply to the human have been successfully simulated in animal models.
